The Audacity of Thought: Fishing is Cool for Kids

Fishing, traditionally viewed as a peaceful retreat from the everyday hustle, is undergoing a transformation of sorts. While the enthusiasts of this pastime are often from an older generation, the world of kids fishing promises not just fun but a plethora of valuable life lessons. Let's dive deeper into why fishing is a fantastic activity for kids everywhere - and how to get them involved.

Is fishing exciting enough for kids?

While many people associate fishing with relaxation and tranquility, it can be taken to the next level with its competitive element. There are fishing tournaments worldwide, turning the humble act of fishing into a fast-paced sport, fueled by the adrenaline of the catch and the quest to break records.

The benefits of teaching kids how to fish

One of the primary benefits of introducing kids to fishing is the life skills they will acquire along the way. At the forefront is patience, which is becoming a rare trait these days. In a world driven by instant gratification, the act of waiting for a fish to bite creates the perfect learning opportunity for a valuable lesson in patience and enjoying the journey, not just the destination.

Why it’s great to bond by fishing together

Historically, fishing has been a solo activity. However, the narrative is shifting. Fishing is becoming a cherished bonding activity. The serene moments it offers, waiting for a bite, become perfect opportunities for parents and children to have meaningful conversations and strengthen their connection.

It’s no secret that family life is hectic, and between all of the chaotic mornings, working late, and general household responsibilities, sometimes it’s tricky to set aside the time to bond with your child - and that’s before we even throw screens into the mix. Fishing serves not only as a common interest but a much-needed time-out for both of you to connect with each other and with nature.

How to get your child interested in the wonderful world of fishing

While fishing remains a popular pastime, youngsters aren't its typical demographic. But is it time to mix things up a little? Enter, a friend of Dewey, Ray, aka "The Rodfather," whose experiences with his daughter offer a refreshing perspective on kids fishing.  "My eight-year-old daughter still goes fishing with me. I think now that it's more because of time with me," Ray reflects, emphasizing the bond they've built over their fishing adventures.

Ray's experience showcases the transformative power of fishing. As he highlights, before introducing kids to fishing, it's essential for parents to master the basics themselves. Kids will very quickly lose interest if you take a long time setting up or fumbling around learning the ropes. Then, unfortunately, their boredom is all they will associate with fishing in the future.

Whereas if you show up, can get them ready to go quite quickly, and can entertain them from the start, your confidence will rub off on them. Ray says, “You need to give them a reason to want and believe.”

And let’s not forget the magic of the fishing pole. Ray notes, "My daughter wants her own fishing poles and I think it's because little people believe that their own sparkly or shiny or blue fishing pole makes them fish better”. It's a wonderful blend of a child's innocence and the allure of fishing, believing that the beauty of the pole affects their success, even though we know it's more about luck and skill.
